What It Actually Is & Why You Should Do It

Okay be honest, if someone asks you about what meditation is, what is your response?

Chances are, you don't even know how to answer him.

''Alright class, what is meditation? Who knows it?''

(that was kinda cringe, sorry)

Although if you asked me that very same question 3 years ago I wouldn't have been able to raise my hand.

Let me tell you what I thought meditation was,

I thought it was an Asian looking old man, with a long white beard, so long it almost touches the ground, dressed in an orange what do you call it? Like a robe type of thing. He's with his legs crossed and his wrinkly hands making that O shape with the thumb and the pointer finger placed on his knees as he overlooks a mountain or a valley.

Basic I know,

But the point is, I thought meditation was only for those hippie weirdo types, the ones 'connected to nature', the ones who would hug trees unironically and who would scoff at you if they ever heard you say something wrong or complain because of 'PoSiTiVe ThInKiNg'.

I was so wrong bro,

Now that I have been meditating every day for 3 years now I know that 1. it's not about how you look when you meditate (it doesn't matter), 2. It's not a weird spiritual practice and 3. Everyone can do it, and everyone SHOULD.

So What is Meditation?

I'm not gonna get into the particularities, damn that's a strong word 🤓.

Basically I'm not gonna tell you things you don't need to know, I'm just gonna share with you what I wish I knew when I first wanted to get into meditation, what you need to do to actually put it into action so you experience the benefits & how it will help you.

I'll tell you all that you need to know so that you don't have that feeling of;

''I want to do this thing but I know nothing about it''.

So what is Meditation actually?

A lot of people get it mixed up with like mindfulness meditation and using mantras all that stuff, they think you'll go into a different dimension if you meditate too hard,

But we don't need those things, this is all we're concerned about.

''Bro JUST TELL ME. What is meditation??''

In it's most simple way, meditation is the Practice of Focus.

That's literally all it is, 

Focus is a skill, and like any other skill it improves through practice, now the action to improve focus is meditation.

Luckily for us, meditation doesn't only improve focus, it also helps is is a BUNCH of other ways.

Benefits of Meditation

So many people advocate it but why is meditation important?

Well, nowadays we are surrounded by screens, blue light and basically everything wants to steal our attention. One of the benefits of meditation is being aware of where you're putting your attention.

Meditation is also one of the most studied practices that actually has scientific proof to back it up.

Along with other benefits including;

And bro believe me, you actually feel the difference, imagine, you don't feel like a mentally slow monkey anymore.

You'll start to feel that sensation you felt as a kid, where like you don't think about things that are worrying you, or things that aren't in front of you, you're just paying attention to what's is literally right in front of you, which is surprisingly hard to do nowadays.

I'm telling you bro it's blissful.

It's like life got more colourful somehow.

Why Should You Meditate?

Well apart from getting all of those benefits listed above it's actually a great way to keep your Attention Span at a healthy level. 

With the introduction of short-form content, quick flashes, cuts and more new things coming out than is is possible to keep up with, slowing down is actually quite refreshing,

Like when you've been in the sun for a while and then you go for a dip in the pool, that's how it feels for your brain, first being constantly surrounded by stimulation and instant gratification and then that calm of nothingness.

It's one of the cornerstone habits of Self-Improvement and you'd be missing out if you didn't do it, and you'd be stupid to skip doing a habit which gives you such a high ROI anyway.
