The Countless Benefits of Meditation - Why You Should Meditate

My goal for this article is to make you interested in starting to meditate/meditating more often by highlighting the immense benefits you get by meditating.

If you feel;

  • Overwhelmed
  • Pressure on your shoulders/back
  • Tight stomach when you breath
  • Overwhelmed by thoughts in you head
  • Have a sluggish brain
  • Can't focus for more prolonged periods of time
  • Lose focus frequently
  • Mind constantly wandering

Then meditation will help you with all of that.

The biggest benefit of meditation that I noticed in my own life is that I notice THE MOMENT I get a thought, so I lose focus less often.

Cause you know sometimes it's like you go on autopilot and you zone out, you're thinking about some random thing and then like 5 minutes deep you finally notice how you were just AFK? I stopped doing that ever since I started meditating regularly.

These are some of the results you can expect meditation to give you;

  • Deeper relationships with friends and loved ones
  • More presence with girls and other guys
  • Compliments on how 'you're a good listener'
  • Better memory (so you don't forget your girl's birthday, or any other date for that matter)
  • Less 'cloudiness' when working/studying
  • Less of the 'I wanna go nap' feeling after eating a big meal

If you want any of these, or all of them, I highly encourage you to keep reading;

This is why meditation is good for you;

So, what are the benefits of meditation?

man before and after meditation

Brain Benefits of Meditation

Let's start with the benefits of meditation for the brain,

Neuroplasticity and Brain Structure:
Research shows that meditation physically alters the brain. One well-known study by Harvard neuroscientist Dr. Sara Lazar revealed that just 8 weeks (about 14 hours total) of mindfulness meditation can increase gray matter density in the hippocampus (linked to memory and learning) and reduce gray matter in the amygdala (associated with stress and anxiety).

Key Brain Benefits:

  • Improved focus and attention span
  • Reduced anxiety and stress response
  • Enhanced memory retention
  • Better emotional regulation

Isn't that crazy??? You only need 14 hours total to physically change your brain, literally changing it's shape and how it performs. The first time I heard this I was shocked, I was like 'That's all? Just 14 hours, that's easy'.

Bro I meditate for 30 minutes a day, I do 14 hours after a month. Imagine sacrificing 30 mins a day for just a month and experiencing benefits FOREVER. Seems like a no brainer.

Speaking of no brainers, I made a SkillShare class on meditation where I'll teach you all of the basics to go from clueless to being able to meditate consistently for the rest of your life. I wish I had something like this when I was just starting out.

It's completely FREE & you get 1 month FREE on SkillShare as well so there's literally no reason as to why you wouldn't take this offer.

Benefits of Meditation for Students

Students can particularly benefit from meditation in the following ways:

  • Improved concentration: Regular mindfulness practice boosts attention control, helping with studying and exams.
  • Reduced academic stress: Meditation lowers cortisol levels, decreasing test/exam anxiety and performance stress.
  • Better emotional balance: Aids in managing social pressure and mood swings common in student life.
  • Increased cognitive flexibility: Supports creativity and problem-solving abilities.

So basically meditation will help you with your concentration during studying and exams, you'll know how to regulate stress better for school and even in your daily life, you'll be more control of your emotions and your brain will literally be more creative, think more rationally and perform better.

Benefits of Daily Meditation in Your Day-to-day Life

Before I start listing the many benefits I want to first mention probably the most poetic benefit I've experienced.

The greatest benefit of meditation that I've felt in my life is that it made it more colourful, which is a beautiful thing, think back of the time when we were children. The world felt more colourful and vibrant right? Meditation will help you feel and see the world through that lens more often.

Alright, now for the other, more main stream benefits;

  • Increased productivity and focus for any tasks you might be doing
  • Reduced burnout and fatigue by balancing the nervous system.
  • Improved interpersonal relationships through better emotional intelligence, patience and self-control
  • Enhanced decision-making abilities thanks to improved clarity, mental calm and clarity of thought

Did you know some companies (like Google and Intel) offer in-office meditation programs due to these well-documented workplace benefits?

Now as cliché as it sounds..

Consistency is the most important thing though. Daily practice—even as little as 10 minutes, 10 MINUTES a day !!!—can lead to:

  • Lasting stress reduction
  • Improved sleep quality (I do a meditation before I go to sleep - The Wim Hof Meditation)
  • Long-term emotional stability
  • Strengthened immune response
  • Cumulative enhancement of self-awareness and mindfulness

The brain changes observed in Dr. Lazar's study highlight how even short, daily practice rewires the brain for the better over time.

So basically you'll be less stressed, get better sleep, control your emotions better, have a stronger immune system and be more present so that you can appreciate the moment more.

And all of this for so little, just 10 minutes. Sounds like a good trade-off to me.

Benefits for Athletes

As an athlete myself the benefits of meditation on my performance cannot be understated.

Many athletes use meditation to gain both mental and physical advantages like:

  • Sharpened focus and concentration during training and competitions
  • Faster recovery from stress and injury by activating the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest state)
  • Improved resilience and mental toughness to not crumble under pressure
  • Better body awareness (useful in sports requiring fine motor skills and co-ordination), You'll basically be more aware of your body and you'll move smoother

Some top performers like Novak Djokovic and LeBron James regularly practice meditation and mindfulness. Even the likes of Mo Salah have mentioned the endless benefits of mental training.

Meditation Benefits on Mental Health

Meditation can also (as you probably assumed) help with mental health. It helps reduce anxiety and reduces the symptoms of depression. It also reduces the feeling of overwhelm, kinda like organizing your desk, but in your head.

Putting everything in it's place, in the correct cabinet.

If I ever meet someone struggling with mental health the first actionable step I'll tell him to take is to start meditating so he can start understanding his thoughts and feelings, cause that's the starting point.

(please note that this is not medical advice and I am not a professional. I'm just a guy sharing what he's learned)

Summary : Benefits of Meditation

Listed above are plenty of reasons why you should meditate and the numerous benefits of meditation at work, at school, in your life, or as an athlete. Meditation will help you no matter who you are or what you do, (because everyone can benefit from better focus and more presence)
