Everyone says that meditation is good for mental health, but how so? What does it do exactly?
And more importantly, how can you use it to battle depression, anxiety and any other challenges or mental anguish that you might encounter?
What are the benefits of meditation for mental health? (Put simply)
When I was going through a hard time in my personal life I kinda just lost interest in everything really. I didn't want to train, or read, or work. Everything I did I had to force myself to do because I was not motivated to do anything, it felt as if I was swimming upstream.
There was always one activity I would look forward to though, and ironically, it was meditation.
You see, when you're in that head space you don't feel in control anymore, it's like what your head says you do, you feel like you're being bullied by your own brain.
You lose control over your thoughts.
This is a video I made on how meditation changed my life, watch it if you wanna get inspired to meditate more/start meditating.
Now meditation helped my in this sense because it helped me regain that control.
(and if you know a thing or two about happiness you know how critical that is)
Turns out I never lost it, I was just too lazy and unmotivated to bother to try and control my thoughts. When I meditated it felt like finally I was in the driver seat, and that I could go wherever I wanted to go (metaphorically of course).
And coming to think of it, there's a direct correlation between control and happiness, so it's no surprise as to why I was so unhappy, I had NO control.
Meditation gave me back control over my thoughts and made it feel like I had the joystick to control the character, rather than just feeling as if I'm watching my own life from afar.
And so meditation made me happier because it gave me back control and a lot of other things that come with it that we're gonna talk about below;
Don't you get it? Don't you see how the benefits of meditation will actually change your life and the way you live it? It will give you the want to live again.
I don't need to get into it deep as I already wrote an article going into greater details here;
Summed up really quickly;
And all of this for just 10 mins a day.
The benefits of meditation for mental health cannot be taken for granted as they feel like the discovery of the Philosopher's Stone.
Meditation is one of the best tools you can use to improve your mental health.
And it's also backed by science.
It will help reduce anxiety, deal with depression, reduce stress, improve sleep, improve self-awareness, reduce symptoms of PTSD and even emotional regulation.
Those all sound great. And while probably (I hope at least) you wouldn't have gone through them all, sometimes we all need a little bit of help, a boost to help us out when we're going through a hard time, and that can be meditation.
Let's start;
I've always been a quiet guy, always shy and on his own, so much so that people even thought I was mute.
So you could imagine how I felt going out of the house or even talking to someone.
I felt like I was shivering, shaking, but not from the cold, it was cause I was anxious being around people, I was scared of what they might think of me, what if I do something embarrassing, what if I'm walking strangely and so on. And I never really knew how to deal with it until I did 2 things.
What meditation does and using meditation to help you deal with anxiety works in this way; we are anxious because we are not present, we are worried, in our thoughts. Now what meditation does is get us out of our thoughts and into our body, so it's not like you're watching a cutscene, it will be like you are playing the character.
So finally you can look up while you walk rather than looking down at the pavement, you'll finally stop being so self conscious and have the confidence to have your chin at a 90 degree angle.
I've found those 2 ways to be the best way to deal with my social anxiety. Meditation for anxiety, and improving social skills (because the best way to deal with a fear is to face it head on)
While the above paragraph is the biggest impact I've felt on my mental health through the use of meditation, there are other benefits of meditation for your mental health;
